Chaos. Controlled chaos, but chaos nevertheless. That's the definition of a cottage garden. In our case, the control comes from a limited color palette of yellows, purples, whites and green.
Different textures, staggered bloom times, everything in multiples. And tucked in here and there, the mint from the herb garden wanders where it wants to go, daring us to find it when we want to harvest some for cooking.
This month, the tall yellow echinacea (coneflowers) and black-eyed Susans give our old-fashioned log house that iconic -- and perfectly chaotic -- cottage garden look.

I love cottage gardens, Lydia! If I had one, it would probably be a disaster though because I'd let it get out of control for sure. ;-) I chuckled at the image of you all hunting for your mint, and coneflowers and black-eyed Susans are some of my favorites.
